Naše první cesta do Ameriky byla plánovaná, jelikož přítel potřeboval vyjet za hranice Kanady, kvůli aktivaci nových víz. Dlouho sme polemizovali kam, ale po tom co tu zima trvala tak dlouho, sme věděli, že chceme do tepla.
Nakonec to vyhrálo L. A.… Původní plán bylo jen Los Angeles, ale v průběhu dovolené sme plány pozměnili, ale to už se brzo dozvíte proč.
Letěli sme přímým letem z Calgary s tím, že tady bylo 5°C s deštěm a v L. A. krásných 21°C se sluníčkem. Cesta byla docela pohodová, jelikož šlo o krátkej asi 3 hodinovej let. Časovej posun tu byl asi o hodinu míň takže trochu lepší pro hovory s rodinou.
Hned po příletu sme si zašli půjčit auto. V takovýchto městech, se totiž vůbec nevyplatí jezdit hromadnou. I autem je vše tak na hodinu. Jelikož v Americe mají občas pro nás zvláštní pravidla, musela jsem auto řídit jen já. Rezervace byla totiž vytvořená na mě a jelikož nejsme manželé, tak by sme za to, že by řídil partner připláceli a né málo peněz. A Proč byla rezervace na mě? To je docela jednoduchý. Partner neměl kreditní kartu, bohužel jen debitní a na tu vám auto nepůjčí. No, jo… Proč si to dělat jednoduše, když to de složitě že jo.
Po tom co sme si pujčili auto, sme hned vyrazili na první výlet a to na Griffith observatory. Krásný místo (i samozřejmě hodně turistický) s výhledem na celý město. Tady sme měli docela kliku, protože nefungoval platební automat za parkování, jakože žádnej z těch asi 6 automatů co tam byli. Takže parkování bylo zdarma. Docela sme přemýšleli, že to využijem a půjdeme pěšky na Hollywood sign, ale byli sme už docela unavení a byla by to minimálně hodina chůze terénem. Proto sme se vzdali po čase parkování zdarma a popojeli blíž k nápisu. I tady se nám poštěstilo a našli sme místo kde se dalo parkovat u baráčků a bylo to i blízko k našemu cíli.
Pak už sme se vydali ubytovat a odpočívat, aby zbylo dost sil na další den. Pro představu, z nápisu se jelo skoro 2 hodiny na hotel. To je tak, když jedete přes celý město který má skoro 4 miliony obyvatel.
Večer na hotelu sme si zašli vedle do restaurace na večeři a k jídlu si dali řekla bych trochu podprůměrný burger s pitím a nechali tam 70 USD (1 600,-). Taková lidová cena, že? Berte toto trochu z nadsázkou, tyto mý vtípky, platy tu sou totiž trochu jinde než u nás v ČR. Pro ně to asi bude lidovka. My ale momentálně pracujeme v Kanadě za minimální mzdu. Já už ne, ale pořád to není úplnej luxus, když si člověk spočítá náklady na život.
Druhej den nás čekala Venice beach a Santa Monica Pier. Pořád sme si L. A. užívali, jelikož sme trávili čas na okraji. Krásná příroda, luxusní baráčky (nebo spíš hrady :D), pláže, slunce… Zaparkovali sme u pláže a byli překvapení že to bylo tak levný (asi 6 USD na den) Brzo nám bylo jasný proč, bylo to asi hodinu chůze od Santa Monica což je molo s kolotočema, stánkama atd. Krásná to byla prochážka po pláži, ulici s pouličníma umělcema, jídlem. Super místo.
Odpoledne sme se vydali konečně do centra a tady přišlo malý zděšení, město je totiž špinavý, plný bezdomovců (ale pozor, vůbec nesmrděli, asi využívají moře a veřejný sprchy) a co musím taky dodat, že byli milý a nijak neotravovali. Dokonce když si dali něco k piti v McDonald´s a stalo se ,že to omylem rozlili, hned si to po sobě uklidili. Byla sem vážně v šoku (v dobrým slova smyslu). Bylo tam ale i strašně moc divných lidí, že si říkáte tak je sjetej nebo má jen svůj svět? Docela mě to děsilo.
V centru byl náš cíl chodník slávy, chtěla sem tátovi vyfotit hvězdu z jeho oblíbenou herečkou což se bohužel nakonec nepodařilo. Chodík není totiž jedna dlouhá ulice, větví se do hromady dalších ulic a je to za mě minimálně na hodinu než to projdete. Občas tam byli místa, kde se nám ani nechtělo zastavovat. Jestli někdy zavítáte do L. A. připravte se na to, že vás bude otravovat hromad zvláštních lidí a budou po vás chtít peníze „aby ste je podpořili“. Člověk musí být trochu opatrnější a ideálně si jich nevšímat.
Před našim příchodem na chodník sme hledali místo na parkování. Po objevení parkování přišlo další zděšení, parkoviště bylo vážně hrozně špinavý, předražený, a zrovna když sme stáli u automatu šel přes parkoviště nějakej pochybnej týpek a u automatu se prohraboval v odpadcích bezdomovec. Okamžitě sme se zbalili a jeli hledat jiný. Díky bohu za to. Našli sme čistý parkoviště za mnohem lepší cenu a hlídaný. K chodníku nás navigace vedla kolem toho prvního parkování a vedle bylo dětský hřiště s nápisem pouze pro děti. Koukám že nápisy s příkazama fungujou všude úplně stejně, protože na hřišti sedělo minimálně 6 feťáků a celou dobu na nás koukali. Asi nikdy sem nemela takovej strach být někde ve městě za bílýho dne. Po tom co už sme měli téměř chodník celej, sme se rozhodli nepokrčovat, koupili si jídlo a mazali pryč z centra. Začalo se totiž stmívat a vážně to nebylo příjemný. Upříme? Zlatí medvědi v Kanadě.
Po této zkušenosti nám bylo jasný, že už do centra prostě nepojedeme. Tak sme si zamluvili hotel na jednu noc v Las Vegas a využijeme dva dny na prozkoumání novych mist. Taky pozor, když si půjčujete auto často tam bývají provincie kam smíte a kam už ne. Naštěstí Nevada a Arizona tam byla. Hurá za novým dobrodružstvím.
Cesta do Las Vegas byla docela pohodová ale dlouhá. Trvala asi 5 hodin, ale bylo hezký pozorovat, jak se krajina mění z krásně zelené na poušť s červeno-oranžovýma horama. I teplota se změnila z 22°C na 36°C.
Po příjezdu do města nás čekala první zastávka a to Las Vegas sign s dlouhou frontou lidí, aby si mohli udělat fotku. Byla tam i paní fotografka, která vás vyfotila na její foťák za poplatek, to je jasný, nebo na váš telefon zadarmo. Byla vážně moc milá. Po fotce naše cesta pokračovala na Hoover Dam, což je přehrada s krásným mostem a asi jen 40 minut od města. Zastávka to byla povinná jelikož se tam natáčeli Transformers 1. Taky sme měli to štěstí a potkali po cestě Bumblebee. Kdo viděl Transformers tak ví. Jo a ne jen po cestě, taky vedle nás parkoval na Hoover Damu.
Po tomto výletě nás čekal už jen hotel a město. Klasicky jako v každým hotelu ve Vegas i ten náš měl kasino. Po ubytování sme vyrazili do víru velkoměsta. U hotelu byla jedna profláklá ulice, tak sme ji šli omrknout. Byla to ulice s obrovskou klenutou led obrazovkou nad hlavama kde pořád něco promítali. Všude byli pouliční umělci, hlasitá hudba, bezdomovci a polonahý striptýz holky který chtěli za fotku s ní prachy… Práce snů. :D :D Kousek od toho blázince sme si dali večeři a zašli na Fountains of Bellagio, to je obrovská zpívající fontána. Za mě nejkrásnější místo ve městě. Po cestě k autu z fontány kolem procházela další striptýz holka, která si odchytla pána od rodiny s dvouma malýma dcerkama. Chytla si ho bičíkem pod krkem a dokud nedal prachy tak nepustila. Je to hrůza čeho sou ti lidi schopní pro pár dolarů. Jo a fotka před Hell´s kitchen Gordona Ramsayho byla další povinnost. A poslední "zážitek" kterej prostě musíte, když ste ve Vegas? No jasný, hodit americkej dolar do herního automatu, náš pokus byl samozřejmě bez výhry, ale stálo to za to.
Další den nás čekala už jen cesta do L. A. a odpočinek na hotelu u filmu před návratem do Kanady.
Bohužel se nám nepodařilo navštívit Grand Canyon, ale to si tam zajedeme určitě znovu. Jen se ubytujeme na kraji města, kde to bude hezký, čistý a člověk se tam cítí bezpečně a pořádně si projedeme národní parky. Hlavně si musím splnit svůj sen a to Yellowstone.
Cesta do Ameriky byla skvělá, hlavně sem si uvědomila jak su vděčná, že su holka z Česka, kde máme vše co k životu potřebujeme, je tam bezpečně, zdravotnictví je skvělý a to jídlo, no topka. A jestli máte tendenci si občas na Česko a Evropu postěžovat, doporučuju si udělat pořádnou dovču do Ameriky. Hned budete happy za to co máte. Třeba zrovna to jídlo je jak v Americe, ale i v Kanadě hrozně drahý a kvalita je příšerná. Dáte prostě balík peněz za večeři a dostanete podprůměrný jídlo ve stylu fast foodu. Pro představu, koukala sem na svou oblíbenou burgerárnu v ČR. Když si tu dáte burger menu, bude vás to stát v přepočtu $17. V Kanadě tu jídlo v restauraci většinou pod $20 nenajdete a že by to bylo skvělý to se říct nedá. Kór burger tu nikdy nebude skvělej, bohužel farmy to tu nemají tak regulovaný jako v Evropě a je tu vetší výskyt epidemií z potravin, takže burgery musí být úplně propečený a tatarák bych si tu rozhodně nedala. Prostě úplně jinej svět.
A až pojedu domů? No tatarák bude 100%. :D

Los Angeles and Las Vegas
Our first trip to America was planned because my boyfriend needed to leave Canada to activate his new visa. We debated for a long time about where to go, but after such a long winter, we knew we wanted warmth.
In the end, L.A. won… The original plan was just Los Angeles, but during the vacation, we changed our plans, but you'll find out why soon.
We flew direct from Calgary, where it was 5°C with rain, and in L.A. it was a beautiful 21°C with sunshine. The journey was quite comfortable, as it was a short, about 3-hour flight. The time difference there was about an hour less, so it was a bit better for calls with family.
Immediately after arrival, we went to rent a car. In cities like these, it's really not worth using public transport at all. Even by car, everything takes about an hour.
Since America sometimes has special rules for us, only I was allowed to drive the car. The reservation was made in my name, and since we aren't married, we would have had to pay extra for my partner to drive, and it wasn't a small amount of money. And why was the reservation in my name? That's quite simple. My partner didn't have a credit card, only a debit card, and you can't rent a car with that. Oh well… Why make it easy when you can make it complicated, right?
After we rented the car, we immediately set off on our first trip, which was to the Griffith Observatory. A beautiful place (and of course very touristy) with a view of the whole city. We were quite lucky here because the parking payment machine wasn't working, like none of the maybe 6 machines that were there. So parking was free. We considered taking advantage of this and walking to the Hollywood sign, but we were already quite tired, and it would have been at least an hour's walk over rough terrain. So, after a while of free parking, we gave up and drove closer to the sign. We were lucky here too and found a place to park near some houses, and it was close to our destination.
Then we headed to our accommodation to check in and rest up, so we'd have enough energy for the next day. Just to give you an idea, it took almost 2 hours to drive from the Hollywood sign to the hotel. That's what happens when you drive across a city with nearly 4 million inhabitants.
In the evening at the hotel, we went to a restaurant next door for dinner and had what I would say was a slightly below-average burger with a drink, and we left $70 (1,600 CZK) there. A real bargain price, right? Take this with a bit of humor, these are my little jokes, as the salaries here are a bit different than in the Czech Republic. For them, it's probably a steal. But we currently work in Canada for minimum wage. I don't anymore, but it's still not complete luxury when you calculate the cost of living.
The second day, Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier were waiting for us. We were still enjoying L.A. since we were spending time on the outskirts. Beautiful nature, luxurious houses (or rather castles :D), beaches, sunshine… We parked near the beach and were surprised that it was so cheap (about $6 for the day). It soon became clear why; it was about an hour's walk from Santa Monica, which is a pier with carousels, stalls, etc. It was a beautiful walk along the beach and the street with street performers and food. A great place.
In the afternoon, we finally headed downtown, and here came a bit of shock. The city is dirty, full of homeless people (but surprisingly, they didn't smell at all, maybe they use the ocean and public showers), and what I also have to add is that they were kind and didn't bother us at all. Even when they spilled a drink at McDonald's by accident, they immediately cleaned it up after themselves. I was really in shock (in a good way). But there were also a lot of very strange people, and you wonder if they're high or just in their own world? It was quite unsettling for me.
Downtown, our goal was the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I wanted to take a picture of the star of my dad's favorite actress, which unfortunately didn't work out in the end. The Walk of Fame isn't one long street; it branches off into a bunch of other streets, and in my opinion, it takes at least an hour to walk through it. Sometimes there were places where we didn't even want to stop. If you ever visit L.A., be prepared for a crowd of strange people to bother you and ask you for money "to support them." You have to be a bit more careful and ideally just ignore them.
Before we even got to the Walk of Fame, we were looking for a parking spot. After finding parking, another shock came – the parking lot was really horribly dirty, overpriced, and just as we were standing at the machine, some shady guy walked through the parking lot, and a homeless person was rummaging through the trash at the machine. We immediately packed up and went to look for another one. Thank goodness for that. We found a clean parking lot for a much better price, and it was guarded. The navigation led us to the Walk of Fame past that first parking lot, and next to it was a children's playground with a sign that said "children only." I see that signs with rules work the same everywhere because there were at least 6 junkies sitting in the playground, and they were staring at us the whole time. I don't think I've ever been so scared to be somewhere in a city in broad daylight. After we had almost seen the entire Walk of Fame, we decided not to continue, bought some food, and got out of downtown. It was starting to get dark, and it really wasn't pleasant. Honestly? Golden bears in Canada are better.
After this experience, it was clear to us that we simply wouldn't go downtown again. So, we booked a hotel for one night in Las Vegas and decided to use two days to explore new places. Also, be aware that when you rent a car, there are often provinces you are allowed to drive in and those you are not. Luckily, Nevada and Arizona were included. Hooray for a new adventure!
The drive to Las Vegas was quite comfortable but long. It took about 5 hours, but it was nice to watch the landscape change from beautifully green to a desert with red-orange mountains. The temperature also changed from 22°C to 36°C.
After arriving in the city, our first stop was the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign with a long line of people waiting to take a picture. There was also a photographer lady there who would take your picture with her camera for a fee (obviously) or with your phone for free. She was really very nice. After the photo, our journey continued to the Hoover Dam, which is a dam with a beautiful bridge and only about 40 minutes from the city. It was a mandatory stop since Transformers 1 was filmed there. We were also lucky enough to see Bumblebee along the way. Those who have seen Transformers know. Oh, and not just along the way, it was also parked next to us at the Hoover Dam.
After this trip, only the hotel and the city awaited us. Typically, like every hotel in Vegas, ours also had a casino. After checking in, we headed into the hustle and bustle of the big city. There was one famous street near the hotel, so we went to check it out. It was a street with a huge arched LED screen overhead where they were constantly showing something. Everywhere there were street performers, loud music, homeless people, and semi-naked strippers who wanted money for a photo with them… Dream job. :D :D A little away from that madhouse, we had dinner and went to the Fountains of Bellagio, which is a huge singing fountain. For me, the most beautiful place in the city. On the way to the car from the fountain, another stripper walked by and accosted a gentleman from a family with two small daughters. She grabbed him by the neck with a whip and wouldn't let go until he gave her money. It's horrifying what people are capable of for a few dollars. Oh, and a photo in front of Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen was another must. And the last "experience" that you simply have to have when you're in Vegas? Well, of course, put an American dollar into a slot machine. Our attempt was, of course, without a win, but it was worth it.
The next day, only the drive back to L.A. and relaxation at the hotel with a movie awaited us before returning to Canada.
Unfortunately, we didn't manage to visit the Grand Canyon, but we'll definitely go there again. We'll just stay on the outskirts of the city where it's nice, clean, and you feel safe, and we'll properly explore the national parks. Most importantly, I have to fulfill my dream, which is Yellowstone.
The trip to America was great, and mainly, I realized how grateful I am to be a girl from the Czech Republic, where we have everything we need for life, it's safe, the healthcare is great, and the food, well, it's top-notch. And if you tend to complain about the Czech Republic and Europe sometimes, I recommend taking a proper vacation to America. You'll immediately be happy for what you have. For example, the food is incredibly expensive in America, as well as in Canada, and the quality is terrible. You simply pay a fortune for dinner and get mediocre fast food-style food. To give you an idea, I looked at my favorite burger place in the Czech Republic. If you order a burger menu there, it will cost you the equivalent of $17. In Canada, you usually won't find a meal in a restaurant for under $20, and it's not exactly great. Especially a burger here will never be great; unfortunately, the farms here are not as regulated as in Europe, and there's a higher incidence of foodborne illnesses, so burgers have to be completely well-done, and I definitely wouldn't order steak tartare here. It's simply a completely different world.
And when I go home? Well, steak tartare is 100% on the menu! :D
